Today, many companies are increasingly interested in choosing Ethernet applications as part of their overall network infrastructure. Still, they often do so without having enough information to make wise business decisions. A word of caution … Be wise first.
Ethernet is a multi-access technology that allows each user to use all bandwidth on a conflict basis. On the other hand, T1 / DS3 is a multiplexing (time division) technology. In fractional format, users have continuous access to their 56K / 64K time lapse.
We can talk about compiling time slots and making all bandwidth available, but the T1 / DS3 discussion lacks one aspect, which is controversial-bandwidth to multiple users. How do I allocate width? Ethernet uses it by design. But I expect T1 / DS3 to need additional resources to implement this … Especially for the appearance of voice apps. I think there is some controversy about using real TDMA technology. But then we lower the cost. Ethernet is fairly inexpensive and provides design / installation flexibility. Traditional TDMA technology becomes increasingly expensive because it relies on fairly accurate timing across multiple hosts in the network. -Network Simplification: Instead of routers and firewalls, you only need one piece of hardware, and enterprises use firewalls with routing capabilities (no router purchase and maintenance required). Fiber Optic: ISPs prefer to deploy fiber optics rather than renting a DS3 loop from an RBOC or ILEC. Operators are expanding their fiber optic footprint, and more ISPs are providing fiber optics to implement fast, high-quality Internet for businesses. Therefore, Ethernet connection.
In general, Ethernet is ideal for business for three reasons:
1) Price: Ethernet device and interface costs will be significantly lower than the other costs you mentioned, especially because Ethernet market penetration means economies of scale will work and reduce costs. .. In addition, Ethernet is generally a non-tariff service, so competition in the market can reduce prices (compared to tariff services offered by telecommunications companies). 2) So many engineers / administrators understand Ethernet and are comfortable, so more engineers find it much easier to solve and maintain problems. 3) Omni-Presence: It seems that big companies are driving (or dragging) the market to Ethernet. This means that most innovations are aimed at Ethernet rather than T-1, DS-3, etc.
That said, I don’t think Ethernet will replace optical products, especially DWDM, in the long-haul market. Synchronization and error correction are very important for long haul, and Ethernet is not. Therefore, I consider Ethernet to be the technology of choice for the last mile transferred by optical services.
